Record number of travelers expected on West Virginia highways

During the holidays it can be expected that highways will be congested with extra traffic. With the 4th of July holiday this week many West Virginia families are traveling to cabins, vacation homes, campsites, and other travel destinations. With the high number of travelers it can be expected that the number of car and truck accidents are likely to increase. This makes it even more important that drivers obey roadway laws.

AAA is forecasting that the Wednesday holiday will break a decade-high number of travelers because the holiday falls mid-week which extends the travel period. Forecasts predict that 40.3 million travelers left home Friday and that 88 percent of those travelers will be on the highways. For this reason, many states will increase the number of troopers on the roads.

For those traveling, you can decrease your chance of being involved in an accident by paying attention to the road and to the drivers around you. Refraining from using cell phones, listening to the radio and reaching for items in the vehicle can help to decrease your chance of being involved in an accident. Of course, refraining from drinking alcohol before driving will also increase the chance that you and your passengers reach your destination safely.

Keep in mind that extra law enforcement officers will be patrolling the roadways over the holiday. To avoid costly tickets, remember to stay within speed limits, follow the rules of the road, and always get a sober cab if you plan to drink. Following these simple rules can help ensure a safe and happy 4th of July for you and your family.
