Tragic car accident leaves university quarterback unable to play

Injuries resulting from serious car accidents can have a lasting impact on a victim's daily life and future. Oftentimes, compensation is available to help offset the costs, and losses, associated with the accident.

The quarterback for Concord University, in West Virginia, was recently injured when the SUV he was riding in was struck by a Jeep that failed to yield. Following the accident, the Concord football coach stated that the quarterback's playing career was over as a result of injuries he sustained in the car accident. The driver of the Jeep was cited for failure to yield. Last year, the victim quarterbacked the Concord Mountain Lions to their first West Virginia conference championship since 1990; the coach reported that the quarterback will remain involved with the team in a coaching capacity.

Following a car accident, pain and suffering damages and compensation for medical bills might be available in specific cases, in additional to general damages. In cases similar to this one, an injured party may be able to recover damages for lost earning capacity and lost wages, depending on the circumstances. Factors the court will consider when making an award for lost earning capacity are the plaintiff's age, health, life expectancy, occupation, talents, skills, experience and training. The focus will be placed on impairment of the plaintiff's ability to earn future income as a result of the injuries sustained in the accident. Lost wages may also be available for lost earnings between the time of the accident and the award or settlement. Future medical expenses may also be recoverable if the plaintiff proves that he will need continuing medical care as a result of the injuries. In some cases, damages are also available for disfigurement or permanent disability.

While a serious car accident can have a tragic impact on a person's life, various options are available to aid the victim with the high costs which are usually involved. This allows them to focus on the future following the accident.
