Truck accident leads to prison sentence following fatality

The loss of a loved one in a truck accident, or any accident, can lead to tremendous emotional and financial stress.

A truck driver in a neighboring state was recently sentenced to eight years for causing a fatal truck accident. The truck accident occurred when the truck driver was heading north in his semi truck and ran a red light, hitting the victim's SUV. The sentence follows the truck driver's entry of a guilty plea to aggravated manslaughter. The judge in the case noted that the truck driver had a "horrendous" driving record. The truck driver claimed that he was suffering from truck driver fatigue and was "sleep deprived" at the time of the accident, as well as being under the influence of methamphetamines.

Following the loss of a loved one, family members who are facing emotional challenges may also find themselves facing financial ones as well. When a loved one is killed following the negligence or misconduct of another, the family members of the loved one may seek damages in the form of a wrongful death suit. Family members that can bring a wrongful death suit include surviving spouses, children and sometimes parents.

Loved ones can sometimes recover compensation for their losses, including economic and emotional damages. Economic damages that can be available to family members in a wrongful death claim include loss of support and services, as well as medical and funeral expenses. As a general rule, the compensation must be fair and just for the economic injuries resulting from the loved one's death.

When a loved one is wrongfully lost, the resulting emotional trauma can be overwhelming. Options are available to surviving loved ones to help relieve some of the financial stress that also comes with such a loss.
