Virginia semi truck accident kills one, injures others

A recent multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 77 in Carroll County, Virginia that resulted in one death and multiple injuries is still under investigation. Six vehicles in all were involved in the crash: three tractor trailers, two passenger vehicles and a motorcycle. It was misting and foggy at the time of the accident. One of the tractor trailers came upon stop-and-go traffic and, as its driver braked, it was rear-ended by another tractor trailer. The impact caused the first tractor trailer to jackknife across several lanes; it was then struck again by the third tractor trailer. A motorcyclist was able to lay the motorcycle down before hitting the jackknifed tractor trailer; a passenger vehicle also clipped the jackknifed tractor trailer and then ran into the median.

A second passenger vehicle then hit the jackknifed tractor trailer. The driver of that vehicle was killed and his two passengers were sent to hospitals; one passenger suffered serious injuries and the other suffered injuries that were non-life threatening. One tractor trailer driver was also taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A series of additional minor crashes followed the multi-vehicle accident but no one else was hurt.

Because of the large size of semi trucks, accidents involving them can be devastating for victims and their families. In a complex multi-vehicle accident with a fatality it is necessary to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause. Semi truck accidents can result from a number of factors: truck driver fatigue, speeding, a failure to properly adjust to road conditions, or any of a number of other factors. In some cases, negligent truck maintenance is to blame.

Victims of truck accidents caused by a negligent truck driver have the right to bring a claim for damages against the truck driver as well as the truck company. An experienced personal injury attorney can counsel victims and their families and represent them in their claim for compensation.
