Hit-and-run driver may have been talking on cell phone

No matter how much evidence is released on the dangers of texting and driving, it seems like some drivers in West Virginia will never heed that advice. Texting and driving, or other cellphone use while driving, creates a dangerous risk, not only to the driver's safety but to the safety of others on the road. Cellphones cause a distraction, and distracted driving leads to car accidents.

A recent car accident in a neighboring state may have been the result of a distracted driver. According to state police in Virginia, a driver caused a four-car crash but then drove away from the scene. Police are still looking for the driver and asking for any information from the public.

The accident happened during the afternoon of June 18 on Interstate 64. According to witnesses, a Jeep or SUV initially crashed into a second vehicle, causing it to crash into a third car and pushing the third car into a fourth. The chain-reaction crash shut down all the lanes of traffic on the interstate for a few hours.

Witnesses also reported that the hit-and-run driver may have been talking on a phone at the time of the accident. Luckily, no one suffered serious injuries from the crash, although one of the drivers involved was taken to a local hospital.

Hit-and-run accidents are even more frustrating than typical accidents because victims in West Virginia may never be able to pin liability on the negligent individual responsible for the accident. Negligent or distracted drivers should be held responsible for the injuries that result from their behavior. If a victim chooses to pursue a lawsuit, the responsible driver may be forced to pay damages to cover the costs of the injuries.
