How to avoid catastrophic injuries in motorcycle accidents

Cabell County, West Virginia, riders know the dangers of riding a motorcycle, which is why they know that their protective gear could prevent catastrophic injuries in the event of a motorcycle accident. Seasoned, experienced and new riders should always keep in mind that the proper protective gear can save lives. Here are some of the most common types of protective gear that should be worn by motorcyclists.

First on this list is a helmet. This mandatory piece of equipment protects the head from impact during collisions. In most motorcycle accidents, head trauma or head injury is the leading cause of disability and death. By wearing a helmet, riders can reduce the chances of sustaining head trauma upon impact. Riders should only wear helmets approved by the Department of Transportation in order to ensure the proper level of protection.

Next is the riding suit. Riding suits made of an abrasion-resistant fabric or leather provide a high level of protection for cyclists. Some types of these suits are padded, which adds to the level of protection. Suits should be breathable and provide comfort for the rider. A rider should also choose a suit based on the weather. When it is raining, water-resistant suits are the best choice, while suits made with light materials are better during summer since they provide better ventilation.

Riders should also use hearing protection. Long exposure to motorcycle engine noise can cause hearing loss. By using hearing protection, riders can avoid high level noises while still hearing important sounds such as sirens.

Lastly, wear proper footwear and gloves. Gloves give riders a better grip, allowing the rider to have better control of the bike. Over-the-ankle boots are the best kind of footwear for riders. These boots protect riders from the heat of the engine as well as from flying debris.
