Doctor errors can lead to fetal distress and birth injury

Parents spend nine months preparing and waiting in anticipation for their baby to be born. When a medical professional makes a negligent decision that results in injury to the baby it can be extremely distressing, especially when injuries are permanent. Birth injury cases require the assistance of an experienced personal injury attorney who will watch out for your best interests.

Fetal distress is one condition that can occur during delivery. It can cause low oxygen that may result in brain damage, major organ failure, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, or death of the fetus. A major sign of this is an irregular heart rate. This can be caused by prolonged labor, maternal diabetes, hypoxia, or shoulder dystocia, a condition caused when the infant's shoulder becomes lodged behind the mother's pelvic bone.

Medical professionals are expected to act fast when signs of fetal distress become apparent. By taking the correct action in a timely manner, it's possible for medical professionals to prevent brain damage from happening. Upon detecting the signs of fetal distress, medical professionals may need to conduct a rapid instrument delivery or emergency C-section in order to deliver the infant as quickly and safely as possible.

When a physician fails to detect fetal distress, or fails to take the proper action upon detection, it can result in serious injury. If a medical professional failed to properly handle the birth of your child and it resulted in brain damage, major organ failure, death of the fetus, or another injury, it's important that you speak with an experienced attorney right away.
