West Virginia third in country for ATV fatalities

While a nearby state led the nation in ATV-accident related fatalities from 2007 to 2011 with a total of 122, West Virginia was not far behind that number with 96 fatalities. This number places West Virginia third in the nation for ATV-related fatalities during that time period. The numbers were recently released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Of the 122 fatalities in the nearby state, most ATV fatalities result from blunt-force trauma to the head often caused by rollover-related injuries. In about twenty percent of the 1,701 ATV-related fatalities that occurred nationally from 2007 to 2011, the ATV collided with a car or truck. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that in 2007, 150,000 people went to emergency rooms in the U.S. for ATV-related accidents and injuries.

ATV-accident related injuries can be particularly serious and costly to treat. Common injuries from recreational vehicle accidents and ATV rollovers include traumatic brain injuries, head injuries such as permanent concussions, neurological injuries, spinal cord injuries and back injuries. These types of injuries can be time-consuming to treat and can be accompanied by significant medical bills.

Those injured in an ATV crash may be able to recover damages for medical expenses, on-going medical care and costs, lost wages, lost-earning capacity, and other types of damages when another party negligently caused the ATV accident in which the victim was injured. Families who have lost a loved one in an ATV crash may also have a claim for damages including medical and funeral costs, as well as other types of damages. In such circumstances, a trained personal injury attorney can help the victim evaluate a claim for damages.
