Loose steel rods caused fatal motorcycle accident

There is always an inherent amount of risk when drivers take to the road. Some of this risk can be mitigated through careful or cautious driving, but the behavior and actions of other drivers remain outside the realm of control. And then there are always the unfortunate, unpredictable events that lead to accidents and catastrophic injuries.

A fatal motorcycle accident recently occurred in Huntington County, West Virginia, on interstate I-64. A female motorcyclist was the victim of the unexpected turn of events. The woman was riding on the back of a motorcycle when steel rods fell of a tractor-trailer. The rods hit the front wheel of the motorcycle and both of the riders were thrown from the bike.

According to authorities, the restraint system on the truck failed and that is why the rods rolled off. Authorities issued the truck driver a citation for having an unsecured load. An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Both bikers were taken to the hospital. The male victim suffered serious injuries and was listed in critical condition, although he is reportedly improving. The female passenger died at the hospital from injuries related to the motorcycle crash. She was a librarian at a local middle school and her family spoke out after learning of her death.

Families of victims in motorcycle accidents like this one do not have to accept that all is lost and that nothing can be done. Although no legal action will ever fill the void of a missing loved one, holding the responsible party liable for negligent behavior might help bring a sense of justice to an otherwise incomprehensible situation. A wrongful death lawsuit might have another benefit as well in the form of damages or monetary compensation for the loss.
