Car accident traps one person inside vehicle near Ripley

Car accidents can happen anywhere and at anytime in West Virginia. While the great majority of accidents yield only property damage and minor injuries, sometimes accidents seriously injure and kill people.

People in one recent accident near Ripley, and some 45 miles northeast of Barboursville, may have been somewhat luckier than that following a midday car collision at the intersection of Gay Road and Haw Run Road. One person was trapped in one of the vehicles and had to be extricated by emergency responders. The identity and age of that person and four other injured people were not given by Jackson County Sheriff's Department deputies. All were taken to a nearby hospital. Authorities did not specify the cause of the collision but are continuing to investigate.

People who are involved in car accidents may consider themselves lucky if they only suffer minor injuries. In some accidents, drivers and passengers suffer severe injuries of the neck, back, head and spinal cord as well as broken bones. These debilitating injuries require extensive medical treatment, therapy and rehabilitation. Recovering from a car accident may take weeks and months as injuries are treated and heal. As a result, the injured parties often experience financial trouble as medical bills pile up. Insurance and savings often do not cover all expenses, which is why car accident victims should seek legal action if an accident was caused by another person's negligence.

Car accident victims and their families have several ways to obtain compensation. One is by filing a personal injury claim; the other is filing a wrongful death claim if the accident claimed the life of a family member. The victims may also accept the settlement being offered by the insurance companies, but should do so only if the amount is enough to cover all their losses.
