Latest motorcycle accident data

In Cabell, West Virginia, more and more residents are riding motorcycles. Motorcycles are an excellent choice, not only for joyriding, but also for people who want to save gas costs during commutes. However, riding motorcycles come with a price -- motorcyclists are especially prone to fatal injuries following an accident. Motorcycles are less stable than cars. Riders must exercise due caution whenever they operate their two-wheeled vehicles. Riders may be interested to learn more about the nation's latest motorcycle collision statistics.

In 2012, there were 4,667 motorcyclist deaths. Ten percent of the fatally injured motorcyclists were riding their vehicles without a valid driver's license. Unlicensed riders are more likely to be involved in fatal crashes compared to licensed riders. In addition, 43 percent of motorcycle deaths were single-vehicle crashes while 57 percent involved multi-vehicle crashes.

In the same year, 90 percent of fatally injured males were riders while 68 percent of fatally injured motorcyclists were passengers. Helmet use was also taken into consideration in the recent data. Based on the statistics, 47 percent of people who died in motorcycle accidents were not wearing their helmets while 59 percent of fatally injured motorcyclists were helmeted.

This data promotes awareness among riders across the country. Riders should be very careful when riding their motorcycles as other drivers on the road often fail to notice them. Riders should make themselves visible to other motorists to avoid collision. Riding defensively can also prevent accidents that often lead to fatalities.

In the event of a motorcycle accident, motorcyclists may receive compensation if the accident resulted from another person's carelessness. To learn more about similar cases, injured victims and their families may wish to have a conversation with a personal injury attorney in the area.
