Many fatal accidents occur on West Virginia roads

With only two days left in 2017, more than 240 people had lost their lives in fatal motor vehicle accidents in West Virginia. While some of those accidents involved single vehicles that killed their drivers, others involved significant multi-vehicle collisions that were caused by the negligence and recklessness of motorists.

Distractions are a major form of harm for West Virginia drivers, with a West Virginia county sheriff noting that cellphones are a big problem for many on the state's mountainous roads. A professor at West Virginia University noted that West Virginia's natural topography can make driving through it a challenge as road surfaces and conditions can change very quickly.

Additionally, West Virginia drivers must contend with severe winter weather during the colder months of the year, and while all of these factors are not unexpected they do seem to cause more fatalities on West Virginia roads than they do in other states in the region. Drivers simply must slow down, reduce their distractions and pay more attention to their surroundings when they decide that they will drive on the state's streets and highways.

When drivers fail to adapt themselves to the many variable conditions that may present themselves in West Virginia and cause hazards for others, then they may be held accountable for the injuries that are sustained from their conduct. Victims of vehicle accidents and the family members of victims of fatal motor vehicle accidents may be able to secure financial compensation for their losses through personal injury-based legal claims. Attorneys throughout the state can provide their clients with knowledgeable guidance on how best to approach a potential personal injury or wrongful death claim.
