Simple steps for preventing distracted driving

As a driver, you know that there's always something going on around you. In addition to what's happening outside your car, there may be quite a bit of action inside. Subsequently, you have to worry about a distraction leading to an accident.

Here's the good thing: There are many steps you can take to prevent distracted driving. It's not always easy to do so, but the right approach will go a long way in keeping you safe.

Here are some simple steps for preventing distracted driving:

  • Only use your smartphone if you need to make an emergency phone call. In other words, don't text or talk while you're driving. There is time for all of that once your car comes to a stop.
  • If you are feeling tired, immediately move your car to the side of the road. You never want to drive drowsy, as this increases the risk of an accident. In some cases, driving drowsy also leads to a distraction in an attempt to stay awake.
  • Don't travel with too many people in your vehicle (if at all possible). The more people there are, the greater chance there is of a distraction.
  • Never eat or drink while behind the wheel. You may have the desire to eat your breakfast as you commute to the office, but this means you'll have to take at least one hand off the wheel.
  • Never multi-task. It's easy to believe you can adjust the radio, talk to your children, and drink your coffee all at the same time. However, in reality, this is every bit as difficult and dangerous as it sounds.

These are not the only steps you can follow to prevent distracted driving, but they will definitely help keep you safe.

If another vehicle strikes yours, perhaps because the driver was distracted, call 911 and wait for help to arrive. In the future, you may come to find that the negligent party can be held responsible for your injuries and any other damages suffered in the crash.
